This is rich: “You know how I was afraid the hate would spread to my family?” — Jen McCreight, Sept. 10, 2012.
So much for her being done with blogging at FtB. That lasted all of six days.
You know why I admire women like WoolyBumblebee? Because they aren’t whiny and don’t call hacks and most of all, they don’t easily get offended. They don’t abandon their blogs in the face of criticism or even nasty name calling. From what I have seen and read, strong women like WoolyBumblebee from Is God a Squirrel and Renee Hendricks (http://www.beliefblower.com/) would extend a big “fuck you” and a middle finger to detractors and go right along with their business without batting an eye. In my view, that is what makes a strong woman in 2012.
Jen McCreight is supposed to be this huge supporter of feminism, but she isn’t making much of a case that women are on an equal playing field with men because most men hit with the same level of criticism that McCreight has been hit with would ignore it and soldier on, as have Dawkins and other controversial male nonbelievers. Even if people are calling you the most vile of names, so what? Give them a big “FU” and move on.
I don’t condone this behavior whatsoever, but as I said in one of my videos, these people aren’t looking to take any actions. In my estimation, they are just trying to get under her skin, and apparently, they are winning.

You'd better believe I would 😀 Thicker skin and no idiotic "sorta" flouncing from this Chill Girl!
There was quite an extraordinary attack against Wooly yesterday on the slimepit wanting to lynch her for supposed "plagiarism". Of course, it was an anon poster doing it, but they made probably 30 semi-coherent posts trying to incite a death squad I guess. Nice seeing no one rise to the bait and reserving judgement until Wooly spoke her defense case. How different to A+/FTB/Skepchick where the courts have kangaroos, juries have to conform to the right biases prior to selection and the judge is also executioner. Here's her response –

Thanks Franc 🙂 Difference between me and the FTB/A+ dumbasses is that I don't lie and then try to hide my shit so I don't look like a complete hypocrite/idiot. They are so paranoid about their own lies that they assume everyone is like them. That's their main problem.
Damn right! I don't go down without a fight. You better bring your A game when you take me on… And even then I'll stand my ground.
You forgot to mention Abbie Smith (in the "strong women squad") Oh, And Paula Kirby, And, well many others (a majority, I think)… 🙂
Maybe her depression is getting to her. Would if be different if she lacked the "thick skin" because her chemo treatment was making her tired?
Comparing Depression to Cancer? Wow… You are an idiot!
Yeah, it's a false dichotomy in any case since a person can't control how they might react physically to cancer treatments. They can control how they react to criticism, whether they are clinically depressed or not.
No, a person can't always control how they react to criticism. One of the hallmarks of clinical depression is the sufferer's inability to control their mental and emotional reactions, getting stuck in mental "ruts". Breaking the destructive cycles of depressive thought by *learning* coping mechanisms is the premise behind cognitive behavioral therapy. A person can "control" their reaction to chemo (through anti-nausea meds, EPO, immune boosters) about as easily as someone can control depression (through SSRI/SNRI, therapy, etc).
Would your reaction be the same if it were a war vet blogger taking a break because of PTSD, triggered by nonstop threats and attacks? Would your reaction be the same if that vet were male vs. female? Which mental illnesses are valid excuses to temporarily stop blogging, and which are merely wussy whiny thin-skinned excuses, in your esteemed opinion?
Gosh, I hope these questions don't interrupt your tasteless schadenfreude.
Schadenfreude. Nice one. Here's the thing: I don't condone any of the hateful things people have said about her; they should stop immediately. I just think that if McCreight is going to carry the banner of feminism, she should stick to her guns and actually be an example of a strong woman, damn the depression. Quitting sends the message that the people saying those things have succeeded in their odious goal.
"One of the hallmarks of clinical depression is the sufferer's inability to control their mental and emotional reactions …"
Is that just you saying that's one of the hallmarks of clinical depression? Because the National Institute of Mental Health lists these symptoms:
– Persistent sad, anxious, or "empty" feelings
– Feelings of hopelessness or pessimism
– Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, or helplessness
– Irritability, restlessness
– Loss of interest in activities or hobbies once pleasurable, including sex
– Fatigue and decreased energy
– Difficulty concentrating, remembering details, and making decisions
– Insomnia, early-morning wakefulness, or excessive sleeping
– Overeating, or appetite loss
– Thoughts of suicide, suicide attempts
– Aches or pains, headaches, cramps, or digestive problems that do not ease even with treatment.
While a person may suffer from any of these, they still have control over how they react to social stimuli, particularly if they use meds. If someone doesn't have control over how they react to the world, they may have slipped into something like psychosis.
As for PTSD, I can't speculate. I don't know that the comparison holds very well because soldiers in war have been mentally scarred by real world experiences, that is the death and agony of fellow soldiers and innocent people. Sure, you can say that McCreight's depression may be based on real world experiences of a different nature (and that too would be speculation), but if you want to compare a blogger in Seattle – freaking Seattle! – with some guy who watched women and children die in Vietnam or Iraq, go right ahead.
