MANY PEOPLE WOULD RATHER DIE THAN THINK; IN FACT, MOST DO. — BERTRAND RUSSELL

The universe and us

There’s the universe in all its vastness, and then there’s us on a tiny arm of this galaxy amid scores of galaxies of which ours is just one, located, no less, inside a supercluster of galaxies. And then there’s believers telling us that God crashed — without making so much as a peep — through the nearly limitless chaos of meteor showers, solar flares, gas storms and gamma ray bursts to extend the hand to humans on this tiny blip of a planet just 6,000 years ago, erstwhile ignoring the unspeakable misery and suffering that befell the human species for tens of thousands of years prior to the intervention, and only 6,000 years ago would he reveal himself, not in Asia, as Christopher Hitchens famously noted, but in the remote, semi-literate backwater of Palestine to tell us that we shouldn’t masturbate, eat shell fish nor accept gay people as — well, people — and that we should, however, feel free to burn random women believed to be witches and to take good care of our slaves.
